Need more storage space for food? Looking to be more economical in 2017 with your family’s food planning? An upright freezer could be your answer. The upfront cost is typically offset by savings on your grocery bill. So this appliance purchase is an investment if you take advantage of it.
But all upright freezers are not made alike! I’ve done the research for you, and here are the Top 5 Upright Freezers of 2017, based on Amazon customer feedback and my own experiences in shopping for a freezer.
I got into hunting this last year and needed someplace to store venison (deer meat) so that I didn’t waste any part of the animal. Not having the meat experience freezer burn was very important to me. I am an ethical hunter, so making sure that a deer’s life was not taken in vain (i.e. their body was not used for nutrition for my family) was very important to me.
I didn’t need a huge freezer as I have a small family. However, be aware of the industry-rule of freezers, which is to allocate 1.5 cubic feet of space per family member.
I’ve found that this rule is actually pretty accurate.
However, make sure to factor in the space you already have in your main refrigerator/freezer combo and be realistic about how much additional storage room you need. Keep in mind that the bigger the upright freezer, the greater on-going energy consumption will be. Also, bigger freezers obviously take up more space.
Here are my Top 5 Upright Freezers of 2017:
This Energy-Star compliant model from Danby is available in a variety of sizes, ranging from 3.2 cubic feet to 8.5 cubic feet. What I like about this one is that it has 3 “quick-freeze” shelves, meaning that food placed in them will be frozen rapidly instead of slowly. It’s a great feature to avoid food spoiling. It also has a reversible door hinge so that you can open the door all the way in order to access your food. Danby is a solid brand, so you can’t go wrong here.
If you need an upright freezer for just one or two people, then this is the best option on my list. At 2.1 cubic feet, this sleek little stainless steel upright freezer from Whynter is an excellent choice. It is Energy-Star compliant, has a keyed door lock to keep small children out (if this is a concern for you), has two removable shelves, and has an adjustable thermostat. Compact, efficient, and modern in appearance; this is a great little freezer.
Also in the compact category, this upright freezer model from SPT ranges in available sizes from 1.1 cubic feet to 3.0 cubic feet. So if you’re looking for a space-efficient freezer with a modern, stainless steel appearance than this is a solid choice. These freezers have manual defrost, which will help you avoid freezer burn. They also have three pullout baskets to make stocking them with food and removing items convenient. The back of this model has a flush back, meaning that the power cord is recessed, so that you can push it close to a wall for maximum space saving.
Need an upright freezer just for personal use or small amounts of food? Then this 1.1 cubic foot option is an energy-efficient and space-saving option from a very reputable brand in the freezer industry: EdgeStar. It also doubles as a refrigerator, so if your needs change you can simply change the temperature settings and use it for refrigerated food and drink storage. It’s stainless steel on the outside, so blends into modern kitchens and offices well. It has a recessed handle, locking mechanism to keep out children (or sticky-fingered coworkers), and top energy efficiency in its mini freezer category.
This Magic Chef upright freezer is hands-down my favorite upright freezer of 2017. It has 3.0 cubic feet of space, which is perfect for a small family for 2-3 people. Not too small and not too large. It has all the features you want and need in an upright freezer, such as:
- Stainless steel door with a sleek, modern black cabinet
- Manual defrost (no risk of freezer burn!)
- Adjustable thermostat
- Reversible door for full access to interior
- Recessed door handle
- Energy Star compliant
Magic Chef is also my favorite brand in the industry, with a great track record of high quality manufacturing, great customer service, and very few complaints from customers about defects. I recommend this option for most people unless you need a large (8.5 cubic foot capacity) upright freezer.
